How much should a rabbit eat
A rabbit’s diet is built on unlimited hay, not pellets. Enter weight and age — we will work out pellets, greens and water per day.
Use kitchen scales. If you do not know, leave it — we use a typical adult weight.
Result
- HayunlimitedFresh, a bundle at least as big as the animal. Hay wears the teeth down and keeps the gut moving — never cut it.
- Pellets50 g
- Leafy greens100–200 gIntroduce one new green at a time, in small amounts, and watch the droppings.
- Water100–300 ml
Worth knowing
- Hay is 80 % of the diet. Without it the teeth overgrow and the gut stops.
- Avoid “muesli” mixes with flakes and seeds: rabbits pick the tasty bits and the diet goes lopsided. Use uniform pellets.
- Switch food over 2–3 weeks, mixing new into old. Sudden changes are a common cause of bloat.
- A rabbit that has not eaten or passed droppings for 12 hours needs a vet now, not tomorrow.
This is a guide for a healthy animal. For a sick, pregnant or old one, the diet is set by an exotic-animal vet.
