Found an animal: how to help it get home
A pet out on the street almost always has someone looking for it. A few steps so the owner finds it and you don't run into scammers.
- Approach calmly. A frightened dog may bite, and a cat may run even further. Take an injured animal to a vet clinic.
- Check the collar and ID tag, then the Lost pets section: the owner may already have posted.
- Ask a vet clinic to scan for a microchip. If there is one, it can lead to the owner.
- Post a listing: a photo, where and when you found it. Leave out one distinctive mark — let the owner name it.
- If you can't keep it, don't let it back onto the street. Ask shelters and boarding places in your city.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know it's the real owner calling?
Ask for photos of the pet at home, the vet passport, or a mark that isn't in the listing. Watch how the animal reacts to the person.
The animal is injured or ill — what should I do?
Take it to a vet clinic. Your city's clinics are in the directory — call before you go to make sure they can see you now.
How much does a listing cost?
Nothing. Posting is free and stays up for two months.
