An editorial estimate, not a measurement.

Suits.

Be aware.

Temperament

Care

Origin

What to watch in this breed

Breed predispositions are not a diagnosis and not a sentence. They are what occurs in this breed more often than in others, and what is worth knowing in advance.

Watch firstMDR1 mutation: drug sensitivity
The most practical thing to know about these breeds. Because of the mutation, ordinary doses of some drugs — including some worm and tick treatments — cause severe poisoning. Do the genetic test once and tell every vet the result before anything is prescribed.
Keep in mindProgressive retinal atrophy
Sight goes gradually, starting at dusk. The animal bumps into furniture in dim light, refuses a dark stairwell, its eyes shine more in the dark. There is no cure, but a blind animal lives a full life as long as you do not move the furniture.

A predisposition means a probability, not a disease. Most animals of these breeds live their lives without any of it. We do not diagnose: the list is here so you know what to ask your vet at a routine check-up and which signs not to write off as old age.

Weight and lifespan are a guide for the breed, not a standard for your animal. Actual figures depend on the line, care and health.
