An editorial estimate, not a measurement.
Suits.
Be aware.
Temperament
Care
Origin
What to watch in this breed
Breed predispositions are not a diagnosis and not a sentence. They are what occurs in this breed more often than in others, and what is worth knowing in advance.
- Watch firstDilated cardiomyopathy
- The heart stretches and pumps less well. The signs come late: coughing, breathlessness, tiring quickly, fainting. That is exactly why this breed has heart scans on schedule rather than on symptoms — discuss the age of the first one with your vet.
- Keep in mindSubaortic stenosis
- A congenital narrowing at the heart’s outflow. It is usually picked up as a murmur when a puppy is listened to — so do not skip the routine check-ups of the first year, even when all seems well.
- Keep in mindBrachycephalic airway syndrome
- Snoring, noisy breathing at rest, a bluish tongue, fainting on exercise. This is not “just the breed” and not a cute quirk: the dog is short of air. Excess weight makes breathing worse than anything else, and heat and stuffiness are directly dangerous.
- Keep in mindHypothyroidism
- The thyroid runs below normal: weight climbs on the same food, the coat dulls and thins symmetrically on the flanks, the dog feels cold and turns sluggish. Easy to blame on age; checked with a blood test and corrected with a tablet.
- Keep in mindGastric torsion (bloat)
- A lethal emergency in deep-chested breeds: a swollen hard belly, retching that brings nothing up, restlessness, drooling. This is the emergency vet right now, with no “let us wait until morning”. Prevention: feed twice a day in smaller portions and no running straight after a meal.
A predisposition means a probability, not a disease. Most animals of these breeds live their lives without any of it. We do not diagnose: the list is here so you know what to ask your vet at a routine check-up and which signs not to write off as old age.
Weight and lifespan are a guide for the breed, not a standard for your animal. Actual figures depend on the line, care and health.
