Suits. Охрана двора и отары. Работает сама, без команды, и не требует, чтобы её всё время занимали.

Be aware. Не для квартиры и не для новичка. Нужны двор, ранняя социализация и хозяин, чьё решение собака принимает без спора. Кобели плохо уживаются с другими кобелями.

Temperament

Крупная, уравновешенная и очень самостоятельная собака. Алабай не суетится и не лает попусту: он оценивает и вмешивается, только когда считает нужным. Хозяина признаёт, но не служит ему — команды выполняет, если понимает зачем, и давлением от него ничего не добиться. К своим спокоен и терпелив, чужого на своей территории встречает всерьёз.

Care

Шерсть с плотным подшёрстком, вычёсывать дважды в неделю, в линьку чаще. Нужен двор, который собака может обходить: в квартире порода не живёт. Щенка нельзя перегружать до полутора лет — суставы у гигантских пород формируются долго, и лестницы с прыжками в этом возрасте калечат. Наследственно значимы дисплазия бедра и локтя, заворот желудка, заворот века; вздутый живот с безуспешными попытками вырвать — немедленно к врачу.

Origin

Аборигенная порода Средней Азии, складывавшаяся тысячелетиями без племенных книг: отбор шёл работой, волком и климатом. FCI ведёт её как среднеазиатскую овчарку. Казахский тобет — близкий родственник и, по мнению части кинологов, местное отродье той же породы; мы держим их отдельно, потому что в Казахстане это два разных названия с разной историей.

Watch firstHip dysplasia
The puppy sits to one side, struggles to get up after sleeping, runs with a “bunny hop” using both hind legs together. What is in your hands: no excess weight and no jumping down from height while it grows. The puppy’s parents are screened by X-ray — ask the breeder.
Keep in mindElbow dysplasia
Limping on a front leg after exercise, especially in a growing dog, and reluctance to go down stairs. It is often put down to a pulled muscle — but a limp that keeps coming back is not a strain.
Keep in mindGastric torsion (bloat)
A lethal emergency in deep-chested breeds: a swollen hard belly, retching that brings nothing up, restlessness, drooling. This is the emergency vet right now, with no “let us wait until morning”. Prevention: feed twice a day in smaller portions and no running straight after a meal.
OccursEntropion
The eyelid rolls inward and the lashes scratch the cornea. Constant watering, a squinting eye, the animal rubbing its face with a paw. It is fixed by surgery; leaving it means a corneal ulcer.
