How to adopt a pet and not regret it

Taking an animal is easy; giving it back hurts everyone. A few things to decide before you bring it home.

  1. Count the time and costs. Food, vaccinations, parasite treatments, the vet, boarding during holidays — for years.
  2. Temperament matters more than looks. Ask how the animal behaves with children, other pets and when left alone.
  3. Get the vet passport. Which vaccinations are done, whether it is neutered, when it was last treated.
  4. Meet more than once. The curator or volunteer will ask you questions too — that's normal, they are responsible for the animal.
  5. The first weeks are for settling in. A quiet spot, a routine, fewer guests. Take your new pet to a vet in the first days.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes: animals in this section are given away for free. Volunteers sometimes ask you to sign a responsible care agreement — that is common practice.

What if it doesn't work out?

Agree in advance with the previous owner or curator that the animal can be returned. Abandoning it on the street or reselling it is not acceptable.

How long does the listing stay up?

Three months, then it is removed automatically. Once the pet has a home, remove the listing in your account.
